NZ falcon are often confused with NZ swamp harrier or introduced hawk & are sparse between Rototua & Taranaki. Kiwi can sometimes heard at night from behind Sun court – not yet seen. This species is the only kiwi in the wild in the North Island. Widespread in native forest & scrub, pine forests, rough farmland. Male gives a repeated high-pitched ascending whistle, female gives a deeper throaty cry |
